Most major univerisity libraries provide access to similar kinds of subject lists to websites.
The Library of Congress maintains a few lists of websites that various staff members have vetted.  The following are some examples:

This list contains many of the Library's subscription services that are not accessible to remote users. However there is also a category for Publicly Available Resources:

In this instance the subject areas are not sorted so you would need to scroll through looking for those of interest to you.
Another resource can be professional associations or organizations.  They have an interest in directing their memberships to authoritative, quality sites.  For example the Reference and User Services Association section of the American Library Association maintains a "Best Free Reference Web Sites" list.  You might wish to browse this list:
